Jeff Burum, executive director of the National Housing Development Corp. (NHDC), was named today as one of 22 members of the newly formed "Millennial Housing Commission."

VA/HUD Subcommittee Chairman James Walsh (R-NY) and Ranking Member Alan Mollohan (D-WV) announced the creation of the commission today at a news conference in Washington, D.C. Burum is one of only four individuals from the Western United States to be appointed to the commission.

"Through the creation of this commission, we are focusing significant expertise on America's affordable housing needs and on the search for better housing for seniors, low-income families and people with disabilities," Congressman Mollohan said. "Each member selected to the commission brings a wealth of experience which will help make the final document an authoritative statement that can guide Congress' efforts in the housing field."

Established by Congress in the VA/HUD Appropriations Act of 2000, the commission will develop legislative and regulatory recommendations for Congress to improve the delivery of housing services to our neediest Americans and expand affordable housing opportunities. The bipartisan commission, which will operate similarly to recent blue ribbon panels on Medicare and Social Security, will consist of 22 members selected by designated members of Congress. (See listing below).

Between now and 2002, the commission will study the effectiveness and efficiency of today's public/private models and try to determine ways to increase the private sector's participation in providing affordable housing in the United States. The commission will also explore whether current HUD programs are adequately satisfying today's housing needs and will make suggestions on how they might be improved.

"I am honored to be appointed to this very important commission," commented Burum. "I grew up in rental housing and I understand and appreciate the influence one's housing environment can have on their personal development -- I look forward to working with my fellow commission members to seek options and solutions that keep quality affordable housing in our country's neighborhoods."

A founding member of a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, Burum has spent most of his career dedicated to providing and preserving quality affordable housing for families and seniors. In 1991, Burum founded Southern California Housing Development Corp., which today has grown to be one of the largest nonprofit affordable housing owners in Southern California. In 1998, following a decade of regional success, Burum established NHDC to address the need for affordable housing preservation on a national scale. NHDC is a unique nonprofit organization that partners with local non-profits throughout the country. It focuses exclusively on acquiring at-risk affordable housing developments and transferring them to local nonprofit housing providers. NHDC is based in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Burum brings a unique blend of expertise to the commission. A member of Lambda Alpha (an honorary Land Economics Society), he understands real estate finance and has creatively applied this knowledge in the affordable housing arena with great success. Burum has experience in many aspects of housing, both nonprofit and for-profit, including development, finance, acquisition, rehabilitation, property management and delivery of on-site social services. Burum's experience will bring valuable practical application considerations to the commission's housing policy debate.

Burum has received recognition for his community revitalization work from numerous government entities, and is a member of the Young Presidents Organization, the National Association of Homebuilders, and the Building Industry Association. Burum serves on several boards, including Children's Fund and Institute for a Better California, and has served as a guest lecturer on affordable housing at UCLA's School of Urban Planning.
